Soft 17 in blackjack

A soft 17 is a hand that totals 17 with an ace counted as 11, like ace and 6, or ace, 2 and 4. It is soft because the ace can drop to 1, so one more card can never bust it.

Does the dealer hit soft 17?

It depends on the table, and the felt tells you. "Dealer must stand on all 17s" means the dealer stands on soft 17. "Dealer hits soft 17", often written H17, means the dealer takes another card. Many casinos use H17 on their lower-limit tables.

Why it matters
