Blackjack insurance
Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace. You bet up to half your original bet that the dealer has blackjack. If the dealer does, insurance pays 2 to 1.
How it works
You bet $100 and the dealer shows an ace. The dealer offers insurance. You put $50 on the insurance line. The dealer checks the hole card.
- Dealer has blackjack: your $100 bet loses and your $50 insurance wins $100. You break even.
- No blackjack: your $50 insurance loses and you play your hand as usual.
The odds
Insurance needs the dealer to have blackjack more than 1 time in 3 to pay off. In a 6-deck game the dealer has it about 31% of the time. Over many hands the bet loses about 7% of what you put on it. Basic strategy never takes insurance.
Even money
When you have blackjack and the dealer shows an ace, the dealer offers even money: a 1 to 1 payout right now instead of 3 to 2 later. It works out the same as taking insurance, so basic strategy turns it down too.
