How to play blackjack
Blackjack is you against the dealer. Bet, get two cards, then hit or stand to get as close to 21 as you can without going over. Beat the dealer's total and you win your bet.
1. Place your bet
Put your chips in the betting circle before the deal. Every table has a minimum and a maximum bet.
2. Get your cards
You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up and one face down. Add up your cards: 2 to 10 count their number, J, Q and K count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11.
3. Check for blackjack
An ace plus any 10-value card is blackjack and pays 3 to 2 right away, unless the dealer has one too. When the dealer shows an ace or a 10, the dealer checks for blackjack before anyone plays. When the dealer shows an ace you are offered insurance first.
4. Play your hand
- Hit to take a card. Keep hitting until you like your total.
- Stand to keep what you have.
- Double down on your first two cards: double your bet, take one card, and your turn ends.
- Split a pair into two hands, add a second bet, and play each hand one at a time.
Go over 21 and you bust: the dealer takes your bet right away.
5. The dealer plays
The dealer turns over the hole card and must hit until the total is 17 or more. The dealer never doubles, splits or makes a choice.
6. Get paid
Beat the dealer's total, or still be in when the dealer busts, and you win 1 to 1. A tie is a push and your bet comes back. A losing hand loses its bet.
An example hand
You bet $100 and get a 9 and a 7: 16. The dealer shows a 10. You hit and get a 4: 20. You stand. The dealer turns over a 7 for 17 and must stand. Your 20 beats 17 and you win $100.
